Parent-Accompanied Study Abroad

Canada offers various visa options that allow parents to accompany their children while studying abroad. When parents stay with their children during elementary, middle, or high school years, it creates a more stable learning environment and supports smoother adjustment to daily life.

How Parent-Accompanied Study Works
  • Child with Student Visa + Parent with Accompanying Visa

The most common case. Parents may reside legally in Canada but cannot work or study.

  • Parent with Student Visa + Child in Public School (Tuition-Free)

If a parent enrolls in a recognized degree program (College/University), their children are eligible for tuition-free public school education.

  • Parent with Student Visa + Child in Private School

Private schools follow their own policies, not district rules. Some may charge local tuition fees if the parent holds a student visa, but policies vary by school.

  • Parent with Work Permit + Child in Public School (Tuition-Free)

If a parent holds an LMIA-based work permit or open work permit, their children are entitled to tuition-free public education.

  • Parent with Work Permit + Child in Private School

In this case, some private schools may also apply local tuition rates for the child.

  • Parent with Language Program Visa + Child on International Student Tuition

If a parent is only enrolled in an ESL program, the child must pay international student tuition.

  • Parent in Graduate Studies + Child in Public School (Tuition-Free)

If one parent enrolls in a graduate program, the other spouse may receive an open work permit, and the child can attend public school free of charge.

  • Parent in PR Application Process + Child in Public School

While a permanent residency application is being processed, children may qualify for tuition-free public school if parents remain in Canada with a valid work permit.
